Settings > Messages > Keep messages (Off, 500, 1000, 2500 in all; off by
default; HIST_FLASH, ui-core/HistoryLog.h). Two append-only logs on the QSPI
flash, channels and DMs, restored into the RAM rings at the start. A batch is
written a minute after the first unsaved change and at shutdown, as the L1's
power switch gives no warning. Each segment has a directory of its own: a
LittleFS 1.x commit erases one of a directory's two fixed blocks every time.
E-ink panels keep their last frame, so a shutdown now leaves "Powered off" on
it and puts the controller into deep sleep.

- DisplayDriver takes ColorVal; each driver's .cpp defines the UIColor roles
(window_bkg, primary_txt, ...) in its own values. ui-new draws in two:
window_bkg and primary_txt. OLED and e-ink look as before (sim screens
pixel-identical).
- E213, E290, LGFX, Null, ST7735, ST7789LCD, U8g2 taken whole from upstream
(with them the rewritten ST7735 driver and the Heltec V4 R8 TFT display).
- SH1106, SSD1306, ST7789, EinkGfxDisplay and the sim drivers converted.
- ui-orig, ui-tiny, simple_* get upstream's colour roles; the repeater's UI
taken from upstream (its power-off screen).

GxEPD2 sends the panel RAM a byte at a time; on the nRF52's SPIM the
per-call overhead dominates, and an 800x480 partial refresh writes the
whole 48 KB several times. GxEPD2_426_GDEQ0426T82_Fast overrides the three
image writes to send each row in one transfer() call, falling back to the
stock path for the cases it doesn't cover (first write, mirror_y, PROGMEM).
Byte-for-byte the same data as the stock driver.
Opt-in per env: -D EINK_FAST_WRITES=1, and EINK_SPI_HZ (default 4 MHz,
8 MHz here, SPIM2's ceiling).

The L1 e-ink solo build splits in two, one per screen shape, so each
screen can be laid out for a single shape. Settings > Rotation now only
turns the screen upside down, and the joystick turns with it.
Landscape writes in misc-fixed 8x13 at the panel's own resolution
(EINK_LARGE_FONT); portrait keeps the 6x9. All drawing moves into
EinkGfxDisplay, which the panel driver and the simulator share; the
FreeSans fonts and the CRC32 library go.

GxEPD2 polls the panel's BUSY pin for the whole refresh (up to ~1-2s),
stalling the main loop. A TX finishing in that window left the SX126x in
standby -- deaf -- until the refresh ended; packets received meanwhile could
be lost (only the latest is readable, and a later CRC failure rejects a good
one still pending). Hook GxEPD2's busy callback to finish TX / drain RX into
a small staging queue and re-arm right away, without touching dispatch/UI.
Wired only where the display driver supports it (GxEPD2: the two e-ink Solo
boards); OLED and sim builds are unchanged.

The screen faded as the device was used: text went grey a few updates
after it was drawn, while whatever had just changed stayed crisp. Only a
full refresh brought it back, and the next few updates ate it again.
A partial update is differential -- the controller drives only the pixels
that differ between its "current" (0x24) and "previous" (0x26) RAM and
leaves the rest to hold their own charge, which this panel doesn't do
well. Priming the previous-image RAM with the inverse of the incoming
frame makes every pixel a difference, so all of them get driven to their
target, in both directions.
The inverse matters: priming with flat white makes only white->black a
difference, so ink is re-driven but never erased and every screen ever
shown accumulates as a ghost. Confirmed on hardware, both ways round.
Costs one extra full-screen RAM write (a few ms of SPI). The refresh
itself is unchanged -- the waveform clocks the whole panel regardless of
how many pixels it drives -- so nothing got slower. Clearing ghosts is
still the periodic full refresh's job (Settings > Full rfsh), which can
now stay off.
The helper needs GxEPD2_BW's private _buffer/_page_height, so it goes in
the patched copy of the header, which every e-ink build now includes
unconditionally rather than only screenshot-enabled ones. All e-ink
variants pin GxEPD2 1.6.2, the version that copy tracks.

Renamed the vestigial Lemon/default font-switch naming (setLemonFont/
isLemonFont/drawLemonChar/lemonXAdvance/_use_lemon -> setSingleFont/
isSingleFont/drawGlyph/glyphXAdvance/_single_font) across DisplayDriver.h
and both concrete drivers -- both have been permanently single-font for
several commits, so the old names invited a future reader to think a
real switch still existed. Pure identifier rename, no logic changed.
Also extracted the byte-identical "SenderName: " prefix-splitting in
MyMeshBot.h's tryBotReplyChannel()/tryBotChannelCommand() into a shared
botChannelSenderSplit(), mirroring the existing botRoomSenderName().

- GxEPDDisplay now uses the same single misc-fixed 6x9 font as the OLED
driver (Lemon retired there too), with baseline math updated for the
new ascent.
- Clock Tools' Alarm screen: Repeat and Armed now respond to LEFT/RIGHT
like every other multi-value/toggle field in Settings, not Enter-only;
Hour/Minute merged into one Time row edited with a hand-rolled HH:MM
digit cursor (like the Timer's), replacing the two-row DigitEditor
popups; Repeat's "Off" label now matches the codebase-wide ON/OFF
casing.
- Top status bar: battery icon now shares the same box height as the
other status icons (Bluetooth/mute/etc.) instead of standing 2px
taller, and its charge nub is properly vertically centred instead of
drifting off-centre at non-multiple-of-4 box heights.
- Small settings-gear icon glyph tweak; wio-tracker-l1 screenshot build
variant now enables DUAL_SERIAL.

A full (non-partial) refresh on every screen change (638eea7b) turned out to be
far too aggressive on real e-ink hardware: every navigation black-flashes,
which is worse than the ghosting it was clearing. Remove the whole mechanism —
DisplayDriver::forceFullRefresh() virtual, GxEPDDisplay's _force_full flag and
override, the endFrame() branch, and the setCurrScreen() call. E-ink is back to
interval-only full refreshes (Settings > Full refresh interval).
The favourites "(gone)"-tile prune that shipped in the same commit is kept.

Two UI quick wins from the 2026-07-05 review:
- E-ink: force a full (non-partial) refresh on the first frame of a new
screen. Inter-screen ghosting was the most visible cheap win — the
N-partials interval alone doesn't catch navigation. New
DisplayDriver::forceFullRefresh() (no-op on OLED), set in setCurrScreen()
and consumed by GxEPDDisplay::endFrame().
- Favourites: clear a stale "(gone)" tile at render time so it reverts to an
empty "+" slot. Happens when prefs outlive the contact list (e.g. a wiped
/contacts3); onContactRemoved only catches a live delete. Pruned slots are
persisted once per pass (self-healing — an emptied slot can't re-fire).
Builds green: WioTrackerL1_companion_solo_dual (OLED),
WioTrackerL1Eink_companion_solo_dual (e-ink).

On a tall portrait e-ink panel the clock and lock screens wasted most of
the vertical space on a small inline "HH:MM". Render HH and MM on two
lines in a new size-4 font (built-in GFX scaled 7×, ~42×56 px) so the
digits roughly double in height and fill the narrow width. Wide panels
(OLED, landscape e-ink) keep the classic single-line size-2 layout.
- New shared drawClockTime() helper used by both the Clock home page and
the lock screen; returns the y below the time block so the date and
dashboard rows flow beneath it.
- GxEPDDisplay: size 4 = built-in font × BIG_TEXT_SCALE (7); getCharWidth /
getLineHeight / setTextSize handle it; fontAscender stays 0 (built-in is
top-left origin).
- Centre the big digits on their visible glyph width — the built-in font
advances 6 px per char but the glyph is 5 px wide, so getTextWidth over-
reports by one trailing column and the digits would sit ~half a column
left of centre. AM/PM rendered one size larger (size 2).

In GxEPDDisplay::print(), the 0xDB fallback block was drawn at
cy - 8*scale, which assumed the Lemon baseline convention
(cy = original_y + 8*scale). For the default GFX font fontAscender
returns 0, so cy = original_y (top of cell) — the block landed
16 px above the character on e-ink (scale=2).
Fix: draw at cy (top of cell) for the non-Lemon path.
Also remove the unused forceNextRefreshFull() virtual from
DisplayDriver — it was added based on a wrong hypothesis (partial
refresh ghosting) and was never wired into endFrame().

Three copies of the same routine: DisplayDriver::decodeCodepoint (added
in the FullscreenMsgView wrap fix) plus per-driver duplicates in
SH1106Display and GxEPDDisplay. Consolidate on DisplayDriver and have
translateUTF8Static also route through it instead of its own inline
decoder. Net: 63 lines removed, single source of truth.

Per-char recomputation of (width() >= height() ? 2 : 1) in drawLemonChar
and lemonXAdvance is now passed in by the caller. print() and
getTextWidth() compute scale() once and feed it to every glyph. All
other callers in the file route through the helper for consistency.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
setTextSize(2/3) switches GFX to non-Lemon fonts (built-in scaled or
FreeSans18pt). The Lemon path bypassed GFX entirely and rendered glyphs
at size 1 scale, shrinking splash version and clock when Lemon font
was active.
Refresh CODE_REVIEW.md: remove resolved issues (signed-int timing vars,
abs() no-op, XBM CRC, loadPrefs nesting, lock-screen LPP thrash, reply
prefix raw UTF-8), add new findings (upstream-merge surface, virtual
width()/height() per glyph, page_order sentinel), list enhancement
ideas.

The placeholder rectangle for codepoints outside U+0020-U+04FF was drawn
1 scale unit too low (y-7*sc instead of y-8*sc relative to the GFX
baseline), causing it to sit below full-height glyphs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adafruit GFX write(uint8_t) treats each byte as a glyph index and cannot
decode multi-byte UTF-8 sequences, so Cyrillic and other non-ASCII chars
were rendered as garbage even with the Lemon font selected.
Add decodeUtf8 + drawLemonChar + lemonXAdvance to GxEPDDisplay, mirroring
the existing SH1106Display implementation. Override print() for Lemon mode
to decode UTF-8 codepoints and draw each glyph directly; override
getTextWidth() to sum per-codepoint advances.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add "Full rfsh" setting (e-ink only) with options off/5/10/20/30
partial refreshes between full refreshes. Prevents ghosting on panels
that accumulate artifacts after many partial updates.
GxEPDDisplay counts partial refreshes and calls display.display(false)
every N frames when the interval is set. Persisted in DataStore and
applied at startup via applyFullRefreshInterval().

- GxEPDDisplay::print() renders '\xDB' as filled rect for Lemon font,
matching OLED Lemon block behavior
- Remove translateUTF8ToBlocks override (base class passthrough sufficient)
- transliterateCodepoint fallback changed '?' → '\xDB' for consistency
- drawTextCentered/Right/LeftAlign now call translateUTF8ToBlocks
- isLemonFont() added to DisplayDriver, SH1106Display, GxEPDDisplay
- isLandscape() guarded by EINK_DISPLAY_MODEL to distinguish OLED vs e-ink
- ind_h trims indicator box height only for Lemon font
- getTextWidth disables wrap before getTextBounds, restores after
- QuickMsgScreen: tighter hist_item padding; 2 messages visible with Lemon
- Hibernate hint fits on one line when width allows, splits otherwise
- BLE PIN page shows toggle hint on landscape e-ink
- Remove unused muted_icon bitmap
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- GxEPDDisplay: fontAscender only applies to sz=1 with Lemon; sz=2 (NULL font)
was incorrectly getting a 16px cursor offset, causing clock text to render
16px lower than expected and overlap the date line
- KeyboardWidget: compute cell_h from available screen height instead of lh+1;
tighten sep_y to lh so the grid fits within 122px even with Lemon font (lh=20)
- SettingsScreen renderBar: constrain box size to available width so the 5th
buzzer-volume square doesn't overflow past the right edge with Lemon font
- NearbyScreen discover detail: manually truncate b64 public key by charWidth
to guarantee one-line rendering; use dynamic step = (height-hdr)/5 so
Status line doesn't fall off the bottom of the screen
- NearbyScreen contacts detail: merge dist+az into one line and use dynamic
step to fit 5 lines within the display; removes the off-screen Seen: row
- AutoAdvertScreen: replace lineStep() gap before hints with 4px fixed gap
so both hint lines fit within the display with large fonts

Portrait mode (122px wide) matches the OLED's ~21 chars/line with a 1× font.
Landscape mode (250px wide) was using the same small 6×8 font, leaving text
physically tiny and the wide display underutilised.
Size 1 now scales by orientation: 1× (6×8 / Lemon 5×10) in portrait,
2× (12×16 / Lemon 10×20) in landscape. Size 2 stays at 12×16 and size 3
at FreeSans18pt in both orientations — their layout Y-positions are hardcoded
so they cannot be scaled without a full layout refactor.
fontAscender() updated to accept a scale parameter; Lemon ascender becomes
8×scale (8px portrait, 16px landscape) to keep top-of-cell coordinate
semantics consistent with the rest of the UI code.

Layout fix: GxEPDDisplay was using proportional GFX fonts (FreeSans9pt/12pt)
for sizes 1 and 2, giving lineHeight=16/20 instead of the 8/16 the UI layout
expects (designed for the OLED's bitmap font). Replaced with the GFX built-in
6×8 bitmap font (size 1) and its 2× scaled variant 12×16 (size 2). Size 3
keeps FreeSans18pt for large headings. fontAscender updated accordingly:
built-in font cursor is top-left (offset=0), Lemon GFX font adds 8px,
only FreeSans18pt still adds 26px.
Lemon font: LemonFont.h already stores the font in GFXfont format, so
GxEPDDisplay can use it directly via display.setFont(&Lemon). Added
_use_lemon flag, setLemonFont() override, and size-1 font selection in
setTextSize()/startFrame(). Adafruit GFX handles UTF-8 decoding for GFX
fonts, so Unicode characters (Cyrillic etc.) render correctly. The FONT
setting in SettingsScreen now works on e-ink the same as on OLED.

Adds Settings > Display > Rotation (0°/90°/180°/270°) that persists to
NodePrefs and is applied on startup. Falls back to compile-time
DISPLAY_ROTATION when the field is missing from an older prefs file.
